Used sport bikes: what to know
Who it suits
A sport bike has full fairings and a low, forward-leaning riding position. It is built for corners and the track: fast and precise, but less comfortable on long trips and with a pillion passenger.
What to check on a used sport bike
- Signs of a crashCheck whether the fairing has scratches or panels in a different colour, or new on one side only, and the state of the footpegs, levers and handlebar ends.
- Track useTyres worn right to the edge, circuit stickers, race parts or engine protectors say it has been on the track.
- Up-to-date servicingThese engines rev high: ask for the service invoices, above all for oil changes and valve adjustments.
- Modified partsA replaced exhaust or ECU changes the bike. Ask for the original parts and check that what is fitted is type-approved.
Frequently asked questions
Does a sport bike suit an A2 licence?
Mid-size ones, often yes. The A2 licence allows up to 35 kW, and a restricted bike only counts if the original version does not exceed 70 kW. Big sport bikes go over that limit and cannot be restricted for A2.
How do I know if it has been on the track?
Tyres worn to the edge, race parts and protectors tell the story. Ask the seller: people who have done track days usually say so, and a well-kept track bike is not necessarily a bad buy.
Sport bike or naked?
The sport bike shields you from the wind and is built to go fast. The naked has a more upright, comfortable position and is cheaper to repair after a knock.
