Used adventure bikes: what to know
Who it suits
An adventure bike is built for travelling: a tall, comfortable position, a big tank, room for a pillion and luggage, and designed for road and dirt.
What to check on a used adventure bike
- Off-road useScratched engine guards, bent rims and crooked footpegs show it has been ridden on dirt. That is not bad, but it counts towards its condition.
- Luggage and extrasPanniers, racks, guards and GPS are worth money. Check what comes with the bike and that it is securely fitted.
- SuspensionCheck for oil on the fork legs (the seals) and that the rear does not keep bouncing after a pothole.
- TyresDual-purpose tyres wear faster on the road. Check the wear and the date.
Frequently asked questions
Is an adventure bike too tall for me?
Many have a tall seat, but there are low versions and lowered seats. Sit on it with your feet on the ground before you decide.
Does an adventure bike suit an A2 licence?
Mid-size ones, often yes. The A2 licence allows up to 35 kW, and a restricted bike only counts if the original version does not exceed 70 kW. Big adventure bikes go over that limit.
Which extras are worth it?
Panniers and racks, engine and hand guards, and a comfortable seat count most on a trip. Already fitted on a used bike, they save a lot of money.
