Who it suits
A quad, or ATV, has four wheels and is built for dirt and for work on the land. There are road models, with a number plate, and others only for off public roads.
What to check on a used quad
- Number plateIf you will use it on the road, check that it has a number plate and is type-approved for that.
- DriveCheck whether it is 4x4 or 4x2 and whether the drive and the lock engage properly.
- Use on the landWork on the land wears out the bike: check the tow hitch, the suspension, the bushings and the state underneath.
- Tyres and suspensionWorn tyres and tired shock absorbers weigh on the price.
Frequently asked questions
What licence do I need for a quad?
It depends on the weight and the speed: a light quad, up to 45 km/h, needs licence AM; a heavy one needs licence B1, where it exists, or a car licence (B).
Can a quad be ridden on the road?
Only if it is registered and type-approved for the road. Without that, only off public roads.
4x4 or 4x2?
For work and difficult ground, 4x4. For leisure on easy ground, a 4x2 is lighter and cheaper.
