Used cruisers: what to know
Who it suits
A cruiser has a low seat, a relaxed riding position with the feet forward, and an engine with plenty of low-down torque. It is for cruising and riding the road without hurry, often with a pillion.
What to check on a used cruiser
- Chrome and rustPitted chrome and rust on the bolts and the exhaust tell you whether the bike was left out on the street.
- Final driveMany cruisers have a belt or a shaft instead of a chain. Check the belt for cracks and the shaft for oil leaks.
- Modified partsReplaced exhausts, handlebars and indicators are common. Ask for the original parts and check that what is fitted is type-approved.
- Clutch and gearboxThe gears should engage without clunks and the clutch should not slip when you accelerate.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cruiser good for shorter riders?
Often yes: the low seat lets you put your feet on the ground. But these are heavy bikes, so try lifting it off its stand and manoeuvring it when stationary.
Does a cruiser suit an A2 licence?
Mid-size ones, often yes. The A2 licence allows up to 35 kW, and a restricted bike only counts if the original version does not exceed 70 kW. Big cruisers go over that limit.
Cruiser or custom: what is the difference?
The names overlap: custom is used more for a bike modified to the owner's taste, cruiser for the factory style, with a low seat and relaxed position.
