Used classic bikes: what to know
Who it suits
A classic is an old motorcycle, or one styled like an old one. It is for people who like to preserve it, restore it and ride it at a relaxed pace.
What to check on a used classic
- Original partsOn a classic, original or period parts are worth more. Ask what has been replaced and whether the originals come with it.
- Rust and frameCheck the frame, the inside of the tank and the mudguards: rust is the most expensive job in a restoration.
- DocumentsCheck the number plate and the papers, and that the frame number matches. On an old bike, papers in order make a big difference.
- Spare partsBefore buying, check whether parts are still on sale for that model, and at what price.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a classic motorcycle?
There is no single rule: the word classic is used for an old motorcycle and also for a new motorcycle in an old style, the neo-retro.
Can a classic be a historic vehicle?
It can, if it is as old as the law requires and in original condition. The rules and the benefits depend on the country.
Neo-retro or a real classic?
A neo-retro is new with an old-style look: reliable, with ABS and a warranty. A real classic is old: it has more character and can gain value, but needs more maintenance.
