Used scooters: what to know
Who it suits
A scooter is built for the city and everyday use: automatic gearbox, storage under the seat and leg protection. It is easy to ride and park, and cheap to run.
What to check on a used scooter
- Belt and variatorThe belt and the variator rollers are replaced after a set number of kilometres. Look for the last change in the invoices.
- Brakes and tyresSmall wheels wear tyres quickly. Check the wear, the date on the tyres and the thickness of the pads.
- Starting and smokeStart it from cold: it should fire up without effort, with no blue smoke or metallic noises.
- Plastics and locksScratches and broken fixings on the plastics, the seat and the lock of the under-seat storage tell you how it was treated.
Frequently asked questions
What licence do I need for a 125 scooter?
Licence A1 covers scooters up to 125 cm³ and 11 kW, and so do licences A2 and A.
A 125 or a bigger engine?
A 125 is enough for the city and is the cheapest to run. For motorways and trips with a pillion, a bigger scooter has more in reserve, but needs a different licence.
How many kilometres is a lot on a scooter?
More than the kilometres, maintenance is what counts: with servicing, belt and variator up to date, a scooter can have plenty of kilometres and still be in good shape. Be wary of low kilometres without invoices.
