Used enduro bikes: what to know
Who it suits
An enduro is built for dirt and trails: light, with long-travel suspension and knobbly tyres. Many are competition bikes.
What to check on a used enduro
- Engine hoursOn off-road bikes, use is counted in hours, not kilometres. Ask for the hours and the servicing done, such as the oil and the piston.
- Number plateCheck whether it has a number plate and papers: without them, it can only be ridden off public roads.
- Frame and subframeLook for cracks, welds and a bent subframe, signs of hard crashes.
- Suspension and bearingsCheck that the suspension has no leaks and that the wheels and steering have no play.
Frequently asked questions
Can an enduro be ridden on the road?
Only if it is registered and type-approved for the road. Without a number plate, only off public roads: on private land or on tracks.
What are engine hours?
It is the time the engine has run, measured on a counter. On off-road bikes it is the measure of use: servicing and replacing engine parts are scheduled in hours.
Enduro or adventure bike?
The enduro is light and built for dirt, with little comfort on the road. The adventure bike is heavier and more comfortable, built for travelling with stretches of dirt in between.
