The inspection

Other countries do have it: in Spain the motorcycle goes through the ITV (Spain's technical inspection) at 4 years and then every 2 years, in France there has been a technical inspection since 2024, every 3 years, and in Germany the inspection is every 2 years.

The EU is reviewing the inspection rules: the European Parliament wants to make them compulsory for motorcycles above 125 cc and governments want to keep the exemption. For now, nothing has changed.

The circulation tax (IUC)

The circulation tax on motorcycles changes from country to country. Check the one for your country.

Compulsory insurance

In the EU, a motorcycle can only be ridden with third-party liability insurance, which pays for the damage you cause to others.

The documents you carry

Always carry your licence, the motorcycle's documents and the insurance. The digital versions accepted change from country to country.

When the motorcycle changes owner

On a sale, the registration and the insurance change. The buying and selling guides explain the steps on each side.
