Used pit bikes: what to know
Who it suits
A pit bike is a small off-road bike, for starting out and having fun on a track. It is light, cheap and easy to maintain.
What to check on a used pit bike
- Where it can be riddenWithout a number plate, it can only be ridden on a track or on private land. Check where you will use it before buying.
- Frame and weldsLook for cracks and welds on the frame and the suspension, signs of jumps and crashes.
- EngineStart it from cold and listen to the engine. Ask when the oil was last changed: in small engines it is done often.
- BrakesCheck the discs and pads, and that the brakes stop the bike without effort.
Frequently asked questions
Can a pit bike be ridden on the road?
No, not without a number plate and road type-approval: only on a track or on private land.
What age is it for?
It depends on the rider's height and the engine size: there are pit bikes for children and for adults. What matters is that you can reach the ground with your feet and wear protective gear.
Which engine size should I choose?
To start with, a small, gentle engine. The bigger ones are for riders who already have off-road experience.
