Used naked bikes: what to know
Who it suits
A naked bike has no fairing, with the engine and frame on show and an upright riding position. It is versatile: nimble in town, fun on the road and cheaper to run. That is why it is often the first big bike for riders moving up from a 125.
What to check on a used naked bike
- Signs of a crashWith no fairing, knocks are in plain sight: scratched handlebar ends, levers, mirrors, pedals and engine covers.
- Chain and sprocket kitThe chain, rear sprocket and front sprocket wear out together. Sharp teeth or a loose chain are a cost to count in the price.
- Non-original partsReplaced exhausts, indicators and plate holders are common. Ask for the original parts and check that the exhaust is type-approved.
- Tyres and brakesCheck the wear and the date on the tyres, and the state of the discs and pads: they are what costs most at a first service.
Frequently asked questions
Does a naked bike suit an A2 licence?
Many do. The A2 licence allows up to 35 kW, and a restricted bike only counts if the original version does not exceed 70 kW. Several mid-size nakeds have a 35 kW version from the factory.
How much does a used naked bike cost?
It depends mostly on the year, the kilometres and the engine size. Today, the ones for sale on Motoland range from €1,450 to €8,990.
Naked or sport bike?
The naked has a more upright, comfortable position and is cheaper to repair after a knock. The sport bike shields you more from the wind and is built to go fast, at the cost of comfort.
